How to Make an Effective 'How To' Tutorial Video That People Will Want to Watch

The internet is a fantastic way of finding out how to do things and can help make life so much easier. How many times have you wondered how to do something and then after one quick Google search suddenly you become an expert? I have a friend who retiled and fitted an entire bathroom purely on the instructions found on the internet and 'how to' videos. Think of the money he saved!

Now I'm not suggesting for a minute that we should all rush off and buy new tiles for the bathrooms that we are about to dismantle. What I am saying is that a good 'how to' video can help its viewers achieve almost anything.

So how do you make your video stand out and be the only people return to time and time again? Well follow these easy five steps to success!

Step one: Make sure it looks the part

We aren't talking Hollywood blockbuster standard here, but at the same time a two minute video that looks like the 'Blair Witch Project' and sounds like it was recorded in the middle of hurricane season is never good. Adjust the volume where you can, and make sure if there is dialogue, that it is clear and understandable.

Step two: Don't forget, the world is watching

Anyone from anywhere could be watching your tutorial video, make sure it's as easy to understand as possible, slang and buzzwords differ from country to country, so try not to confuse people with too much 'dope leet speak'.

Step three: Know your audience

Who are you creating the video for? Is it for beginners? If so, there is no point in using technical terms that your audience won't understand. Likewise, explaining what a brick is used for and then going on to explain how to build a house probably isn't a good idea if your video is aimed at more experienced people.

Step four: Keep to the point

We all love a good epic, Lord of the Rings, Lawrence of the Arabia, they are both great films in their own right but what do they have in common? They last for a long time. Now there is no right and wrong in how long your videos should last, but the simple rule is, they should only last as long as they need too. A 'how to' video is exactly that, a video tutorial of how to do something. It doesn't need long intros or stories about what had you for breakfast (unless your video is about what you had for breakfast). All it needs is the tutorial itself. Sure make it fun, have cool (not annoying) music, tell some jokes, but keep it to the point!

Step five: Make an impression

Usually a viewer will decide within the first five or ten seconds whether the video is right for them. Just because the video is about a topic they are interested in doesn't mean they won't turn it off and find a video made by someone else. So make an impression and give it some personality. The beauty of watching a 'how to' video over reading a website or a book is that it's about personality. Make it fun and interesting and people will watch you. They might even come back to watch other videos you might create now that your hooked!
